"All about literature, Where it it, When it is, Who it's by, and Why there's no such thing"

That's the subtitle for my 4,000-word essay, "Cowboy Lit," available FREE Tue & Wed, Dec. 11 & 12 on Amazon Kindle's Roland Cheek page:

This provocative essay was actually created while riding horseback in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, using my saddlehorn as a writing desk and a broken No. 3 pencil stub as my keyboard. "Cowboy Lit"offers solid evidence that a thinking mind never stops, and is, in fact, sometimes uncontrollable. Here's an excerpt from the essay to demonstrate:

A few months earlier I'd been strolling through the aisles of a major chain bookstore in what passes for one of Montana's cities, I was amused to note that several rows of their books were marked: "Fiction & Literature". "Excuse me, ma'am," I said to a passing storecleerk, "which of these books are fiction?"

"They're all fiction," she replied, waving a sheaf of papers at the rows of shelves. The lady seemed in a hurry and I felt badly for what I was about to do.

"All right, then, which are literature?" Her eyes narrowed. "Look, ma'am, I continued, "your sign says fiction and literature, right?"

"Ye-e-e-s." "Then kindly show me one that is 'literature' so I won't have to sort through a bunch that is merely 'fiction' in order to find the good stuff."
